The BIG clean-up: Part Deux!

On Saturday morning November 24th, over 70 volunteers along with the family themselves, showed up yet again at 708 to clear the lot once & for all. It was a chilly day, but everyone still came to smile, work hard & show their support. Volunteers even showed up with charcoal grills to prepare burgers & hot dogs for the people working. To Anna, these people 'are all angels.' She & the rest of the family are awestruck by the outpouring of support they are receiving, most of which is coming from complete strangers. The weekend before, over 40 volunteers were there to help with the initial clean-up. The 'Star Ledger' also showed up that day to take pictures & speak w/the family. They put out an article that featured the family's story in last weeks paper.  The 'Asbury Park Press' was here for this last clean-up & another beautiful article was written, telling the family's story.
The clean-up was successful & the lot is clear but the hole in their hearts will always remain.

A TON of wonderful volunteers showed up on Saturday morning!

The area where the house once sat. Volunteers worked tirelessly to remove debris & clear the lot.

The Yurgelonis home; reduced to a long pile of rubble that stretched over 3 properties long.

Volunteers working together to carry large concrete pieces from the homes foundation.

Family member: Bruno Pruscino of Bruno Pruscino Masonry, Inc. came back with the family on Sunday the 25th to 'finish the job.' He donated his time & his machine to push the rest of the home off of the lot.

They discovered Anna & Charlie's master bedroom under a section of the roof.

They sifted through 'the bedroom' but unfortunately nothing was left or worth keeping.

The family's home - completely unrecognizable. Sandy had no mercy.

Anna Yurgelonis picking up the pieces of her home, her life.

Whole walls from their once beautiful home, were uncovered & moved to the curb with the rest of their life.

R.I.P: 708 Brook Avenue Union Beach, NJ

Unfortunately, the family only had insurance on the structure of their home & not on the contents. Therefore, everything they worked so hard for over these last 19 years is gone & they will not be compensated to replace any of it!! They need our help!! Please consider making any donation & please continue to share this blog & their story with others.

The BIG clean-up: Part 1!

Over this past weekend, the family along with over 40 volunteers began the BIG clean-up at 708 Brook Avenue. A necessary but emotional day for homeowners: Anna & Charlie Yurgelonis, as they worked alongside the volunteers to clear out the lot where their beautiful home once stood.
Volunteers working HARD to pick-up the pieces of the Yurgelonis home. Seen in the foreground are the steps that once led to the house (there was also a beautiful porch-deck over them) & heavy pieces of the foundation, scattered about like toys.
Their oldest daughter Lisa said it was amazing to see all these people (a few of whom she knew, the rest were welcomed strangers) working diligently & carefully to help clean-up the 'mess' that Sandy left behind.
A volunteer adding to the 'trash' pile. These piles are seen everywhere throughout the town. To the passerby they are trash, but to the family they are their homes, their lives, their past...
Any found items from the home were given to Anna to inspect on whether or not to keep. They found a lot more photo's & keepsakes beneath the heavy rubble which would create momentary smiles & relief. The family is clinging to anything they can find from their life at 708.
A reporter from the 'Star Ledger' newspaper showed up to take pictures & interview the family. He was welcomed on site, as everyone agrees how important it is for the masses to see what is really going on there.
Volunteers had generators running to operate saws & power tools needed to break up large debris. A large portion of a neighbor's home had landed on the Yurgelonis' property. The family & volunteers also worked carefully to set aside items from his home as well. Since he wasn't there, the items were taken to the Union Beach Borough Hall where all found items are being kept until claimed by their rightful owners.
Volunteers working on removing a large section of a neighbor's home that ended up on the Yurgelonis property. The neighbor was not present, but all found items were carefully removed & turned in at Borough Hall for him to pick-up.

A wide view of the property. Anna is seen to on the far left in a red jacket. This was/is one of the most difficult things she has ever done; watching the pieces of her home picked up & put in a pile to be taken away forever.

A bittersweet sunset over the roof of the family home.

This clean-up was extremely successful, but the family still has a long way to go. They are organizing another clean-up this Saturday & expecting an even bigger turnout of friends & volunteers to help.

Please continue to support the family, they need all the help they can get!
They were able to move into their rental home earlier than expected with the help of family & friends to clean & move (what little they have) in. The financial burden of having to replace the basics for a home are overwhelming. Your monetary contributions will help lessen this burden & provide the family with comfort & peace of mind.

Jaelyn's last Goodbye...

Anna & Charlie's grand-daughter Jaelyn saying goodbye to the only home she has ever known.

Today, November 13th, was the family's last visit to the area where 708 once stood. An emotional day,  I'm sure. On this cold rainy morning, the family took one last look through the rubble in hopes of finding any other memento's from their home.
Their 7 year old grand-daughter Jaelyn visited with them & said her goodbye's too. 708 has been her home since day one of her little 7 year old life. The storm took away all of her favorite toys & clothes; & for a 7 year old, that is earth shattering. Next week, Jaelyn, along with the other children in town, will re-start school for the 1st time in 3 weeks. They will be going to school in a different town since the Union Beach school was also ruined in the storm.
It will be another big adjustment for her, but at least she can get back to her teacher & friends to experience some kind of 'normal!'
Jaelyn also said her last goodbye to the family's pet Macaw 'Diego', who was found on the other side of town & then buried by the family in what was once their garden.
On a 'bright side,' the family did find a rental home that they will be moving into on December 1st. I know they are looking forward to settling into their own space & attempting to make it feel like home. They will be moving in with nothing but the clothes on their backs & a few other miscellaneous items. They will need everything from beds & couches to plates & utensils. The family is extremely grateful for all the emotional & financial support they have received thus far, but it's a mere fraction of what they will need to continue down the path of a 'new beginning.' Your donation's will help them fill the house with the things they need & most importantly a little 'peace of mind' as their financial burden continues to get heavier by the day.
Please continue to share this page with your friends & let's keep this momentum going!

Picking up the pieces...

A portion of a fence that once stood around the Yurgelonis family yard.
Everyday (that they have been permitted), the Yurgelonis family have gone back to their property on Brook Avenue in Union Beach to sift through the rubble that, just 10 days ago was their warm & happy home. Each day they hope to find any pieces of the life they loved at 708 before the devastation of 'Sandy.'

Some pictures & other mementos have been found, but it still can't fix the hole that 'Sandy' has left in all of their hearts.

The family is fortunate to be surrounded by other family members & friends showing tremendous support. They are forever grateful for everyone's generosity & donations. It will be a long road ahead as they move forward & they will need all the help & support that they can get!
Family members helping to sift through the debris. Their son Doug (left), son in law Alex (middle) & daughter in law Kristine (right) work together to flip over a wall from what was once the family garden shed.

The roof of the Yurgelonis family home was still in tact, albeit completely severed from the house & on the ground, with all contents still in the attic.....& they were all dry!
A very dim light at the end of a very long tunnel...

Please consider donating, to help this very special family get back their life!

Please Help This Very Special Family!

                                        BEFORE SANDY

                              The Yurgelonis Family Home:
708 Brook Avenue Union Beach, NJ

                                         AFTER SANDY

On Monday October 29th, Hurricane Sandy devastated my hometown of Union Beach, NJ. Everyone in town suffered damage in one way or another. Every home has flood damage & many homes are just gone....

One of the families who lost everything, are near & dear to me: the Yurgelonis family of 708 Brook Avenue. Up until Monday night, they have spent the last 19 years calling this house their home. Their kids have grown-up there & over these recent years, their grand-kids have had the pleasure to laugh & play there too. Their oldest daughter Lisa is my best friend. Her & I have been friends since we were young kids. Her family moved into this house when we were in high-school. I remember being so excited because they were 'finally moving back to Union Beach!' (they had been living in another town for many years). Once they moved in, I'm pretty sure I was over every day & spent almost every weekend sleeping over!

Over the years, I watched in awe as Lisa's mom Anna & her dad Charlie took in many foster children (adopting some) & provided them a loving home. Their house always had (& still 'does') children's laughter, dogs barking, parrots squawking, & babies crying....it was awesome.

The house & all of it's contents are now gone forever...

I am now determined to help the Yurgelonis family: Anna & Charlie, their 13 year old son Jaden, their 18 year old daughter Marina, their 19 year old son David & their 7 year old grand-daughter Jaelyn; rebuild their lives in every way, shape & form. No amount of money will ever bring back all the memories lost, but it will help lessen the burden as they build new ones...

Behind her, the rain boots belonging to her grand-kids that she had planted with flowers this past summer...

The family's beloved pet macaw: 'Diego' was found on the other side of town.
This is Anna burying his body in what was once her garden...
